Therapeutic Solutions

Derek started off his young life working on a farm and then went on to Join the Royal Air Force where he completed 27 years of service. On leaving the military he went on to join many sales teams where he became astute to other peoples needs. From there he joined the NHS and became a venepuncturist for 5 years and realised that many people, including staff and visitors alike, had problems within themselves but just carried on regardless. So during his NHS term, he studied through ‘The School of Modern Psychology’ (Achology) where he is a Senior Achologist 1 and learned many aspects of therapy, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Counselling Skills, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Life coaching and Mindfulness’. He currently practises and continues to study other modalities to enhance his knowledge to help others however he can.

As a male Therapist, Derek has built his practice around a calm, grounded, and relational approach that helps people feel at ease from the moment they meet him. With a steady confidence shaped through years of professional and personal growth, he creates an environment where clients feel safe enough to explore their inner world without fear of judgement or pressure. His presence is warm and steady, making it easier for individuals to open up about the challenges they face.

Derek’s work is deeply rooted in psychology‑led learning, giving clients access not only to therapeutic support but also to an understanding of their own thought patterns, behaviours, and internal motivations. He believes that insight forms the foundation for meaningful change, and he guides clients in identifying the structures beneath their emotional experiences. Through this combination of empathy, curiosity, and psychological depth, he empowers people to discover new possibilities within themselves.

Central to Derek’s practice is his commitment to a philosophy‑driven approach that emphasises self‑awareness, personal responsibility, and transformative learning. Derek uses ‘Achology’ principles to help clients reconnect with their values, challenge unhelpful beliefs, and develop practical tools for everyday life. His delivery blends structured methodology with genuine human connection, creating a therapeutic process that feels both grounded and accessible.

As a male counsellor, Derek recognises the unique barriers many men face when seeking support. Societal expectations can make it difficult for men to express vulnerability, but Derek works intentionally to dismantle these barriers. By modelling openness, authenticity, and emotional steadiness, he shows clients—particularly male clients—that counselling is not a place of weakness but one of strength, self‑reflection, and growth.

Derek’s approach is also highly relational. He understands that counselling is most effective when clients feel truly seen and heard, so he prioritises building trust through attentive listening, honest dialogue, and a non‑judgemental stance. He walks alongside clients rather than leading from above, encouraging them to take ownership of their journey while knowing they are fully supported.

Above all, Derek is committed to helping people become the most authentic and empowered versions of themselves. His blend of psychological expertise, Achology‑aligned learning, and grounded empathy creates a transformative experience for those who work with him. Whether supporting someone through a life transition, emotional challenge, or personal development journey, Derek brings a depth of compassion and insight that helps clients move forward with clarity and confidence.
